THE GAINS OF GRAPEVINE COMMUNICATIONS TO AN ORGANIZATION
From its definition, Grapevine Communication is a form of informal communication that is usually based on rumours. It’s a form of communication that’s bound to exist in an organization, and it is a self-proven fact that whatsoever be the effect of grapevine on the organization, management cannot do away with it.
But if an organization should focus on the positives, the organization will begin to see and tap from the enormous benefits of the grapevine communications.
Grapevine Communication is extremely useful to function as an appurtenance to formal channels of communication. It is direct and a fast channels of circulating information, and it is present within all levels of employees of any organization.
Grapevine Communication somehow brings a sense of belonging to employees and managerial staff, and it is tremendously influential in creating corporate identity and building teamwork.
Here are some of the gains of grapevine:
1. CREATE SOCIAL BOND
Grapevine communication creates a social bond where none existed; it achieves this by providing excellent opportunities for diplomatic, social contacts that make life at work more enjoyable.
People like to talk to one another; whether they talk about work or family, or anything. Teams tend to bond when members speak to one another outside of the project or assignment they may be working on.
2. IT COMPELS TRUTH
Grapevine communication has a way of helping you to compel the truth. Humans nature are put off by falsehood; we hate to be knowingly lied to! If we feel or think someone is withholding information from us, we feel almost a moral entitlement to seeking out the truth.
3. WARNING SIGN
The Grapevine can also serve as a warning signal for management of an organization concerning an emerging crisis or planned action by the employees. Thus they benefit the information they received from the grapevine.
This gives the management time to think over the problem and plan its ways out well in advance to deal with the problem efficiently.
Grapevine provides managers much response about employees and their work exposure thus increasing their understanding about their work-force and situations. They can then make plans on their actions to take decisions supportive to the employees.
5. UNDERSTANDING REACTION
It is one of the reliable ways to know the reaction of people to a deliberated policy and action. At times, management takes the benefit of a situation by feeding the message on the grapevine to get the opinion of people about the decisions before they are being implemented.
If the response is positive, it may announce it soon, or if the response is negative or passive, necessary adjustments or correction may be done and in this way support of employees can be gained.
